Individual Note
From David Pennefather's history:
Richard William Pennefather, was educated at St Patricks school. He gained
his B.A. and LL.B at Melbourne University and was admitted to the Victorian
bar in 1876, the NSW bar in 1880 and the W.A. bar in 1896. In 1871/72 he
was working for the Crown Law Department in Melbourne. 1880 he was a
solicitor in Echuca and in 1891-92 was a Barrister in Little Collins Street,
Melbourne. He moved to Western Australia where he practiced law in
partnership with John Horgan. In 1898 he built a fine house in Broome
Street, Cottesloe with fine ocean views called “Overton Lodge”. In 1996 this
building is the Cottesloe Civic Centre and War Memorial Town Hall. Richard
William became a QC in 1900. Was sometime MLA for Greenough and
Attorney General of WA 1897-1901 and acting Judge of the Supreme Court
until 1902 when he resumed practice at the bar. Richard married Maud V.
Smith of St Leonards in 1910. Also recorded as marrying Florie Edith
Fullagar in Perth in 1897. A daughter, Irene Sylvia born Cottesloe 1898,
from this union. Pennefather Street in Canberra is said to be named after
Judge Pennefather.
